C-Birt was phenomenal and is exactly the type of software the construction industry needs.

I used C-Birt to manage the warehouse department, and it became an essential part of our day-to-day operations. The platform allowed us to maintain accurate inventory levels, track the movement of materials, receive incoming goods, and anticipate potential stock shortages before they disrupted production.

What impressed me most was that C-Birt went well beyond basic inventory management. We were also able to log payroll, manage component assemblies, and track the materials required to build each house. Having all of this information within one system gave us greater visibility across the department, reduced manual work, and helped the team operate more efficiently.

Before we started using C-Birt, most of our purchases were in response to panic phone calls from project managers on the job site saying that they had run out of a certain product that they needed right now. Instead of being able to plan our purchases, negotiate best prices and terms from vendors and optimize the logistics, we were limited to grabbing the product from whoever could supply it the fastest.

The system tracks product inventory, matches this against predicted consumption, and predicts the exact date when each product will need to be re-purchased to avoid running out of stock. We are now free to plan the procurement schedule for the entire project and can source products from anywhere in the world, because lead times of 90 days or more are no longer an issue. There is simply no way we would go back to procuring for projects without using C-Birt.

When I moved to Montego Bay in 2012, I joined the construction project as a Payroll Clerk and Administrative Assistant. At the time, payroll processing was managed using Excel spreadsheets. I was responsible for payroll data entry, generating payslips, and maintaining a shell log to track completed tasks for a development of 101 residential units with over 500 contractors.

Scenic Developments Limited, in partnership with the construction team of Infinite Concrete Limited, undertook the construction of 431 single-family homes in Lucea, Jamaica — one of the largest single-owner residential developments of its kind in the parish. A project of this scale, spanning hundreds of units with concurrent construction, procurement, and payroll activity, demanded a level of coordination that manual or fragmented systems simply could not deliver.

C-Birt, developed by Philip Newman, became the backbone of our project controls. Three capabilities in particular were decisive to our success: real-time construction task tracking gave us visibility into progress across all 431 units as it happened, rather than relying on lagging site reports, letting us identify bottlenecks and reallocate resources before delays could compound. Procurement tracking kept materials aligned with the construction schedule, reducing the idle time and cost overruns that typically come with supply mismatches on a project of this size. And practical payroll tracking tied to completed tasks ensured that labor was paid accurately against verified work, tightening cost control and removing a major source of budget leakage on large multi-crew builds.

Once a task is completed and verified by Quality Control, the associated payment is automatically transferred into the payroll system. This significantly reduces manual payroll processing and eliminates the lengthy data entry typically associated with large construction projects.

Material Procurement — Material procurement has become far more proactive. Because project tasks are pre-planned and linked to inventory requirements, the procurement team receives timely prompts to purchase materials based on current stock levels and upcoming work. This greatly reduces the need for constant follow-up and helps prevent delays caused by material shortages.

Improved Relationships with Trades Personnel — Accurate and transparent payroll has strengthened relationships with our field teams. Before payroll is finalized, a payroll preview is generated and reviewed by Project Managers and team leaders. Any missed items can be identified and corrected well before payday, giving everyone confidence that they know exactly what they will be paid. This transparency has significantly reduced payroll-related disputes and improved trust across the workforce.

Project Reporting — At any stage of a project, the system can generate detailed status reports showing actual progress and percentage completion. While every project has variables that can influence outcomes, the reporting provides a reliable snapshot of project performance and a realistic forecast of the work remaining.

What stands out most is that C-Birt is not a static product. Despite already being a mature and capable platform, it continues to evolve through regular improvements and enhancements that reflect the changing needs of the construction industry.

After more than nine years of using the software, I can confidently say that C-Birt has made me a more efficient and effective Project Manager. It has streamlined operations, strengthened accountability, improved communication, and simplified many of the administrative processes that traditionally consume valuable project management time.
